What is Needed from Teachers
THIS IS DIFFERENT TO MY PAST EVENTS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
Recordings must be uploaded by June 1st.
Guidelines For Your Workshop
- The workshop needs to be new content that you have not previously used elsewhere. A new recording of an old workshop is fine but it cannot be reused footage.
- Each workshop must be accompanied by a challenge, set by you, so people can "complete today's challenge" and get points on the leaderboard. Challenges should be easy and verifiable via a photo. For example: For a paper piecing workshop you might say "Show me the project you are going to use this technique with." Or for a mug rug making workshop you might say "Show me your in-progress mug rug." You will need to describe the challenge at the end of your video. The organizers will take care of tracking who completes which challenges. Bea can advise on suitable challenges.
- Some companies are interested in having you use their tools and fabrics in your workshop recordings. This is entirely optional and seen as an opportunity for you to receive free supplies and start a relationship with a potential future partner. You will be able to indicate when you sign up whether you are open to this and you will be notified of opportunities as they arise. There is no payment for this other than the free items.
- You MUST use an external microphone to ensure good quality audio. This is our most common complaint about past workshops. Microphones start at $30 and there is more about them in the video recording guidance.
- Feel free to include a 1-2 minute pitch AT THE END of your workshop for something you sell or for yourself as a teacher/lecturer.
- The majority of our attendees belong to a Quilt Guild or Group and those groups need workshop teachers and lecturers. Think of your workshop as your time to shine and show what you're made of. Don't be afraid of going deep into a topic. 81% of our attendees identify as "intermediate" quilters with 14% "beginners" and 15% "expert".
- Length is 20-60 minutes. Please do not go longer.
- To collect email addresses from attendees you need to offer something for them to download. Attendees are mindful about giving away their email addresses so this needs to be something attractive. As a minimum it can be a PDF supply list but you will gain more email subscribers if it is a more useful item such as a pattern piece or detailed instructions. Unlike previous events, you do not need to give away high value items like full size patterns.
- Please structure your content in a way that allows attendees to walk away feeling like they’ve learned something.
Optional
- Contribute a pattern to the pattern bundle that attendees can buy and earn income from sales.
- Host a quiltalong for one of your patterns during the event and benefit from promotion of the quiltalong to all attendees.
- Offer a coupon for your online store during the event in the "Digital Goody Bag" (for free) and get additional traffic to your store.
Additional guidance on recording your workshop will be available from April 1st.
What is Needed from Designers
Registration for your Quiltalong must open on June 1st. You will handle registration however you wish.
Guidelines For Your Quiltalong
- You will run your quiltalong however you wish to do so between July 1st and Aug 3rd.
- From June 1st, all registered Quiltalongs will be promoted to attendees when they register.
- Quiltalongs are encouraged to create groups in the off-facebook community to discuss and share progress.
- Each quiltalong will also be registered as a Challenge i.e. a way for attendees to earn points for the Tour de Fabric Leaderboard.
Affiliate & Pattern Bundle Income
- You get 30% of the price of the extension passes bought by people using your affiliate link (approx $14.70). You will get the details to register as an affiliate by May 15th.
- If you have a pattern in the pattern bundle you will receive $1 for every bundle sold, regardless of who sold it. This will be paid in August.
- If you have a pattern in the bundle and also sell the bundle using your affiliate link, you will received an additional 30% of the bundle price (approx $14.70).
- If you do not have a pattern in the bundle and you sell the bundle, you will receive 20% of the bundle price (approx $9.80).
- Sales of the combined extension/pattern bundle will result in a 30% share for those with patterns in the bundle (approx $26) and a 25% share for those without patterns in the bundle (approx $19.75).
Marketing Commitment
- All teachers and designers are asked to make a 15 second video, introducing themselves and saying the title of their workshop/quiltalong, for use on social media.
- All teachers and designers should share on social media at least 4 times between June 1st to August 3rd and to email their lists at least twice (each) during this period. You’ll want to share using your affiliate link (which you will set up from a link we email you).
- You’ll find swipe copy and graphics in our Marketing folder (coming by May 15th). Watch for details in the private discussion group.
Live Event Participation
We will be having 2-3 live events per week. Participation is optional but those who took part at the January event saw significantly higher traffic and sign-ups plus continue to benefit from people's access to these recordings on YouTube. There will also be an off-facebook community where you can interact with attendees throughout the event to build your reputation.
